Chapter 15

“You know, it would be better if I removed your soul.” Zaz considers me with glittering eyes. “You’re going to drive my poor pets into a frenzy.”

I square my shoulders. “Touch that soul again, and I’ll—”

“Relax.” He pats my cheek. “I’m not going to. Yet. It might kill you. And maybe I’m getting used to having you around.”

Recoiling from the heat of his palm, I shift my face away. “Don’t get too used to it.”

“Why? Are you going somewhere? Some urgent appointment I should know about?” He torments me with a mocking smile.

I frown. Being cruel and heartless comes naturally to Zaz. But ever since he rescued me from the Sluagh, he’s been even more loathsome, going to incredible lengths to taunt me. Almost as if he wants to prove how despicable he can be. But just who, exactly, is he trying to convince? If it’s me, he needn’t bother. As far as I’m concerned, when it comes to malevolence, Zaz is the MVP.

As if on cue, he grabs me roughly, dipping me back in a twisted tango.

“We’re going to have lots of fun together.” Planting his nose in my hair, he inhales deeply. “And when I get bored, all I have to do is reach in and pluck your soul out and let the evil in.” He swings me back up. “Then we’ll have even more fun. If you survive it.”

He gives me a brazen wink and I retch, pretending to gag. I’m all too aware it’s a dangerous act of provocation in his current mood. But if he wants to push me, I’m going to push back. As foolish as that might be.

“What’s wrong, Rael?” he asks, his voice dangerously low. “Not so keen on consorting with a demon anymore, since you found true love? Speaking of pathetic emotional attachments, does Devin know your dirty little secret? That you have a piece of his soul?”

I look at him blankly. “Devin knows everything.”

“Everything?” His face is full of mocking surprise. “I sincerely doubt that. Does he know about me?”

He has me there. After Devin’s reaction to my night with Airech, I was reluctant to go any further into the finer details of my sexual history. Anyway, we didn’t exactly have a chance to discuss it before Gabriel started carving me up like a holiday turkey.

Zaz snickers at my refusal to answer. “Didn’t think so,” he crows.

I seem to be spending a lot of time counting to ten lately. When I’ve brought my blood back down to a simmer, I respond. “That was nothing. One night.”

He raises a shapely black eyebrow. “If it was nothing, why not tell him?”

“To be honest Zaz, I’d forgotten all about it, until you reminded me.” I stifle a yawn. “That’s probably the right word for it. Forgettable.” I smile on the inside at the way his ears flush scarlet.

“Forgettable.” He chews on the word like it has a bad taste. “I had you shouting so loud you woke the dead.”

“That man wasn’t dead,” I correct him.
